Eight Crusaders Earn Winter Academic All-League Accolades

Valparaiso University placed eight student-athletes over four sports on the Horizon League’s 2015 Winter Academic All-League Teams, as announced today by the league office.

Men’s track and field had three student-athletes recognized, while men’s basketball and women’s track and field each earned two honorees.  Men’s swimming also had one recipient as well.

Men’s Basketball

Vashil Fernandez – Sr. – Named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year after a senior season in which he led the league and ranked among the top-10 nationally with 98 blocked shots, a new Valpo single-season record. Finished career second in program history in blocked shots. Currently owns a 4.0 GPA in the international commerce and policy graduate program.

Alec Peters – So. – A First Team All-Horizon League and First Team NABC All-District 12 selection. Led the Crusaders with 16.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and ranked among the top-10 nationally in 3-point percentage (46.6%). Currently owns a 3.340 GPA as a sports management major. Named a CoSIDA Academic All-District V First Team selection.

Men’s Swimming

Alec Domjan – Jr. – Ranked second on the team with a top time of 1:47.53 in the 200 free. Member of Valpo’s top 800 free relay squad (7:08.10), which ranks eighth in program history in the event. Owns a 3.756 GPA as a psychology major.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Jacob Frey – Sr. – Finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 59’2 ¾” at the HL Indoor Championships. Ranked second on the team in the event, and moved into third in program history in the weight throw at the league indoor meet. Owns a 3.68 GPA as a civil engineering major. Earned Academic All-League honors both indoors and outdoors last season.

Elijah Owen – Jr. – Set a new school record in the heptathlon (4,413 points) at the HL Indoor Championships, finishing in second place. Also ranked second on the team in the high jump (5’10”) and third in the long jump (20’3”) indoors. Owns a 3.819 GPA as a theology major. Earned Academic All-League honors outdoors last year.

Christopher Sosnowski – Jr. – Finished sixth at the HL Indoor Championships in the weight throw (50’1 ¼”). Owns a 3.953 GPA as a finance major.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Liz Bloy – So. – Finished third in the one mile run (5:00.27) and 10th in the 3,000m run (10:31.70) at the HL Indoor Championships. Led the Crusaders in both events during the indoor season. Ranks fourth in Crusader history indoors in the one mile run. Owns a 3.589 GPA as a theology & ministry major.

Kelli Wosick – Sr. – Finished ninth in the 400m dash at the HL Indoor Championships. Led Valpo indoors in the 200m dash (26.84), 400m dash (59.19) and 600m run (1:42.30). Ranks second in program history indoors in the 400m dash and fourth in the 600m run. Owns a 3.802 GPA as an English and secondary education double major. Earned Academic All-League honors both indoors and outdoors last season.
