McNair Inks NLI to Join Valpo Basketball Program

The Valparaiso University men’s basketball program has announced that Justus McNair (Joliet, Ill. / Joliet West) has signed his National Letter of Intent to join head coach Roger Powell Jr.’s program for the 2024-25 season.

A two-time all-conference honoree, McNair averages approximately 17 points per game on the AAU circuit and 11 points, five rebounds and three assists over two varsity seasons on a loaded Joliet West team.

“I’m extremely excited about this young man from Joliet, Ill., my hometown,” Powell said. “He’s a tough, physical and athletic guard who will add even more athleticism and ability to shoot the ball to our team next year. I’m fired up and can’t wait to get him here and help us continue to build a winning tradition.”

Powell and McNair have a deep connection that goes beyond their shared Joliet roots, a factor that proved pivotal for the 6-foot-3 guard in the recruiting process.

“The first thing that attracted me to Valpo was the coaching staff, and specifically Roger Powell,” McNair said. “My parents grew up with him in Joliet. He’s amazing; that’s my guy. I talk to him all the time. I talk to him about basketball and about faith in God. We talk about basketball for hours, about the team and about the fit.”

McNair lists going to state in eighth grade as a favorite basketball memory. He also highlighted last season’s Joliet West sectional championship appearance, fueled by a late-season, 14-game winning streak and a 29-6 record.

“I feel like I’ve really grown by playing with great players,” McNair said. “I’ve played with All-Americans and five-star recruits. I’ve grown by watching and learning; I’ve matured physically and mentally. I’m a hard worker day in and day out. When my shot isn’t falling, I continue to play defense. I’m a leader on the court. I’m working on getting my body bigger and stronger to be more physical.”

In his spare time, McNair enjoys bowling and going to church with his friends. He and his coaches and teammates bowl competitively during Christmas break, coaches vs. players. He describes himself as a funny, kind and calm person who is willing to be anyone’s friend.

“Growing up, my dream was to play Division-I basketball,” McNair said. “It’s a blessing and it’s crazy. When I went on my visit back in May, Valpo really felt like home. The coaching staff was amazing. I like the way they played. It is a great fit for me. The campus is only an hour and 15 minutes away from home, and I can bring a lot of family members and friends to watch me play.”
