Eight Valpo Swimmers Named Academic All-District

The Valpo men’s and women’s swimming teams combined to have eight swimmers recognized as Academic All-District honorees as College Sports Communicators released its swimming Academic All-District rolls on Tuesday.

The Beacon men had four honorees, including junior Andrew Berzai (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka Marian), who repeated as an Academic All-District recipient. Berzai carries a 3.787 GPA as an exercise science (pre-physical therapy) major.

He was joined by classmate Brendan Stangeland (West Fargo, N.D./Sheyenne), who is a mechanical engineering major with a 3.606 GPA, as well as a pair of sophomores — Anthony Martin (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett), a mechanical engineering major with a perfect 4.00 GPA, and Ricky Helmboldt (Tucson, Ariz./Arizona Connections Academy), an integrated business engineering major who also carries a perfect 4.00 GPA.

On the women’s side, Valpo had four student-athletes recognized as well, two of whom were repeat honorees. Senior Bridget Pollard (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South), a health science major in the physician’s assistant program with a 3.781 GPA, and junior Haley Hume (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette), a mechanical engineering major with a 3.983 GPA, both earned the accolade for a second straight season.

Pollard and Hume were joined by a pair of sophomores as honorees. Madi Boor (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) carries a 3.928 GPA as a health science major in the physician’s assistant program, while Natalie Eaton (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks) is a communication and political science double major with a 3.909 GPA.

The octet all meet CSC Academic All-District standards by virtue of having a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. To qualify for the honor, individuals must also have reached at least sophomore academic and athletic status.
