The Crusader men's tennis team improved their Horizon League record to 3-2 Friday thanks to a convincing 6-1 win over the Youngstown State Penguins.
Valpo had little trouble securing the doubles point as Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) registered an 8-1 win over Max Schmerin/Rodrigo Campos at No. 2. Eric Honert (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) and Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) took care of business against Sharvil Nawghare/Zeeshan Ismail at No. 3 with an 8-4 victory.
Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) tallied the first singles win of the day at No. 2 after he beat Silviu Mistreanu 6-4, 6-1.
Youngstown State sliced the margin in half with a triumph at No. 3 singles as Dawoud Kabli defeated Honert 6-3, 6-4.
The Brown and Gold went on to win the remainder of the singles matches.
Schorsch downed Sebastian Hagn 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) at No. 1 to give Valpo a 3-1 match lead. Sophomore Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) clinched the Crusaders' 18th overall victory of the season when he handed Schmerin a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 loss at No. 4 singles.
Dunn recorded his sixth three-set win of the year with a 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-0 win versus Campos at No. 6.
Emhardt advanced to 23-4 in singles play on the season when he outlasted Ismail 6-7 (8-10), 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5.
"We really played tough today and pulled out some great three-set wins," head coach Jim Daugherty said.
Friday was the first match the Crusaders were able to play outdoors at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
Valparaiso (18-7, 3-2 Horizon) will conclude the regular season Saturday with a 2 pm first serve versus Cleveland State (12-7, 3-1 Horizon) at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
