Chris Honig (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]) ran the fastest time by a Crusader in the mile run in over 30 years to lead the Valparaiso men’s track and field team Sunday in the final day of competition at the Horizon League Indoor Championships in Kent, Ohio.  Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) was named the Horizon League Outstanding Field Performer after his record-setting effort in the weight throw on Saturday.

Valpo tallied 28 points on the meet, good for seventh place in its first season of league competition.  Milwaukee earned the team title with 176 points.

Honig completed the mile run in 4:14.72, good for a runner-up finish and less than a second behind the event winner.  His time was the fastest by a Valpo runner in the event since Tom Kilcoyne ran a 4:13.0 in 1978, and is the second-fastest in Crusader history.

Honig also placed sixth in the 3,000m run with a time of 8:48.89, just behind fellow Crusader Jim Turchyn (Batesville, Ind./Batesville), who finished fifth, crossing the line in 8:45.52.  Also on the track Sunday was Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), who registered a time of 8.50 seconds in the finals of the 60m hurdles, good for fourth place.  Heun’s time is the third-fastest in the event all-time at Valpo.

In the field events, Erik Lindamood (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) recorded the fifth-longest distance in Crusader history in the shot put, tallying a mark of 47’5 ¼” to finish in sixth position.  Brett Maynard (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) placed eighth in the same event with a toss of 41’4 ¼”.  Steve Schubert (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) led Valpo in the triple jump with a leap of 41’2 ½”.
