This Week in Crusader Soccer: Valparaiso wraps up its season-opening homestand on Friday afternoon as the Crusaders welcome IPFW to Eastgate Field. The Brown and Gold then take to the road for the first time in 2007 on Sunday afternoon, traveling to Indianapolis to battle IUPUI.
On the Air: Friday’s match against IPFW will be carried live by WVUR (95.1-FM, Valparaiso) and online at www.valpo.edu/athletics. Students will be providing both the play-by-play and color commentary. Sunday’s match at IUPUI will not be broadcast.
Series Notes: Valparaiso leads the series with IPFW 3-2-1 in a series that dates back to the 2001 season. The Mastodons won last year’s meeting, though, 1-0 in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Crusaders also hold a 5-3-1 edge against IUPUI, and have won each of the last two meetings between the schools. Last year, Valpo registered a 4-1 victory over the Jaguars at Eastgate Field.
Scouting IPFW: The Mastodons have dropped their first two matches of the season including a 5-4 double-overtime setback at home against Cleveland State on Tuesday evening. Danielle Orlandella leads IPFW with three points on a goal and an assist. In goal, Malinda Holmer has played every minute this season and has already recorded 16 saves. The Mastodons joined the Summit League this season after spending the last few years as an independent.
Scouting IUPUI: The Jaguars, a former Valpo foe in the Mid-Continent Conference, dropped a pair of contests at the Northern Illinois Tournament to open the season. The Jaguars fell 1-0 to the host Huskies before losing 3-0 against Navy. IUPUI has 12 letterwinners returning from last season, including Emily Hicks, who led the Jaguars with five goals and 11 points one season ago. In goal, Jamie Farrell, who had a 0.87 goals against average in 2006, has played every minute thus far this year.
Wrapping Up Last Week’s Action: Valpo opened the 2007 season on Friday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Murray State, the Crusaders’ third straight season-opening win. Jackie Thomas and Jessie White each scored for the Brown and Gold in the victory while Erin Murray registered two saves in the shutout. On Sunday, the Crusaders dropped a 2-1 match against Illinois State. Lori Johnson provided the lone tally for Valpo in the 85th minute.
Succeeding in Overtime: The Crusaders are unbeaten in overtime over their last 15 contests (6-0-9) dating back to 2003.
Murray Adds to Shutout Record: Erin Murray notched her 15th career shutout in the season opener against Murray State. She now has more shutouts than any other Crusader in school history in both the men’s and women’s program.
Rookies Start First Collegiate Match: Freshmen Lynnea Pappas and Kylie Revelle each drew starting assignments in their first collegiate matches against Murray State. Pappas also started against Illinois State.
Trio Among Scoring Elite: Valparaiso currently has three players among the top-eight in school history on the all-time goal scoring list. Junior Kendall Brown is tied for fourth all-time with 15 goals while classmate Lori Johnson is alone in sixth place after scoring her 12th career goal against Illinois State. Sophomore Sarah Jewell ranks eighth in the scoring charts after her 10 goals last year.
McGlone and Murphy Tied for Seventh on All-Time Assist Charts: Dana McGlone and Laura Murphy each are in a tie for seventh place on Valpo’s career assist list. The pair each have seven helpers during their career wearing the Brown and Gold.
Johnson and Brown are Winners: Lori Johnson is third in school history with six match-winning goals over the course of her career. Kendall Brown is just one match-winner behind, as her five markers are tied for fourth on the all-time list.
Valpo Picked Sixth in Preseason Poll: The Crusaders were selected to finish in sixth place in their inaugural season as members of the Horizon League according to the preseason poll conducted of the league’s head coaches.
