Four Beacons Selected to MVC Soccer Scholar-Athlete Teams

The Valpo soccer team was represented by four players as the Missouri Valley Conference released its Scholar-Athlete Teams on Friday.

The Beacons tied for conference-high honors by placing three players on the Scholar-Athlete First Team: Allie Anderson (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South [Xavier]), Nikki Coryell (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) and Nicole Norfolk (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels). Addy Joiner (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) rounded out the quartet of honorees, as she was named to the Scholar-Athlete Second Team.

Anderson was named to the Scholar-Athlete First Team for a second straight season. A two-time All-MVC selection, Anderson scored three goals this season, including the match-winner in the championship match of the MVC Tournament. She was named to the All-Tournament Team and earned the Elite 17 Award as the student-athlete in the title match with the best cumulative GPA. Anderson is completing her degree in exercise science and has a perfect 4.00 GPA.

Coryell earns a spot on the Scholar-Athlete First Team for the third consecutive year. A four-time All-MVC honoree and three-time Valley Goalkeeper of the Year, Coryell was named the MVP of the MVC Tournament after recording shutouts in each of Valpo’s four tournament victories — in the process setting the Valley record for career shutouts. Coryell carries a 3.975 GPA as an accounting and sports management double major.

Norfolk picks up Scholar-Athlete First Team accolades for the fourth time. A three-time All-MVC honoree, including First Team recognition each of the last two years, Norfolk set program records for career matches played and matches started this season. The stalwart center back got involved on the attack this year as well, scoring three goals — including match-winners versus Northern Illinois and UNI — and tallying four assists. Norfolk holds a 3.971 GPA as a biology and chemistry double major.

Joiner earns a spot on the Scholar-Athlete Second Team this year after being an Honorable Mention Scholar-Athlete last season. The junior, a two-time All-MVC choice, scored a team-high eight goals this season — tied for second among MVC players and ninth-most in a single season in program history. Her 18 career goals rank her sixth all-time at Valpo. Joiner owns a 3.701 GPA as an economics and marketing double major.
