Valpo freshman swimmer Emma Schmidt (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday after pacing the Beacons in three individual events last Saturday in a dual meet at Green Bay.

Schmidt’s meet was highlighted by a pair of second-place finishes, as she was runner-up in both the 500 free (5:25.54) and the 400 IM (5:03.10). She also led Valpo in the 200 fly (2:22.30) and swam the Beacons’ fastest leg of the 800 free relay.

Schmidt is the first Valpo women’s swimmer to earn a weekly award from the Valley office since Paige Wright was named Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 29, 2019. Schmidt and her teammates return to competition in just over a week, traveling to Carbondale, Ill. for the A3 Performance Invitational, hosted by SIU.
