The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee shutout Valparaiso’s women’s tennis team 7-0 on Saturday evening in Milwaukee, Wis.
The Panthers started quickly, surrendering just five games to the Crusaders in doubles. Kari Kastenholz and Sammi Schoen defeated Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) and Julie Wingstrom (Dallas Lake, Ind./Westview H.S.) 8-3 at the top of the lineup. Kelly Drvaric and Ashley Schoneman topped Lindsey Gustafson (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) and Laura Lawson (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) 8-2 at the second spot while Martina Schnapp and Jenna Felsher defeated Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) and Jackie O’Reilly (DePere, Wis./DePere H.S.) 8-0.
In singles play, Lawson nearly pulled off a win at sixth singles for the Crusaders, falling in a tie-break for the third set against Schoneman 3-6, 6-4, 10-3. Milwaukee (9-8, 3-1 Horizon League) won the other five matches in straight sets. Drvaric downed Sajevic 7-5, 7-5 at the top of the lineup while Kastenholz defeated Keifer 6-1, 6-3 at number two singles. Schnapp was a 6-3, 6-1 victor over Gustafson and Schoen downed Wingstrom 6-2, 6-2. Felsher defeated Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles.
Valparaiso (2-7, 0-2) will head to Green Bay on Sunday evening for a 6 p.m. match against the Phoenix.
