Tennis Falls to Sam Houston State to Start Spring Trip

The Valparaiso University tennis team dropped the opening match of its annual spring break trip on Monday, falling 7-0 at Sam Houston State.

How It Happened

  • Two of the three doubles matches were tightly contested. Sam Houston State had already secured the No. 1 doubles win, and clinched the point when its No. 3 tandem edged Elizabeth Sobieski (Muskego, Wis. / Muskego) and Mia Bertino (Lockport, Ill. / Joliet Catholic) 6-4. The No. 2 doubles match involving Sydney Stone (Brisbane, Australia / Tyler JC]) and Jolene Fernandes (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) was deadlocked 5-5 when play was halted.
  • Bertino took a set from Sahithi Vutukuru at No. 3 singles, winning the set 7-5 after dropping a close first 6-4. She fell in a match tiebreak 10-6.
  • The other matches all finished in straight sets in favor of the hosts. Stone nearly forced a third set at No. 5, but she was edged 7-6(5) by Roberta Sechi in a tight second set.
