Valparaiso struggled on Saturday afternoon as the Crusaders began the 2007 fall season at the Rocket Invitational in Toledo, Ohio.
Julie Wingstrom (Wolcotville, Ind./Westview H.S.) won the only match for the Crusaders, posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lydia Pond in the Rocket Singles portion of the tournament.

The Blue Singles competitors played twice on Saturday.  Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) dropped a pair of matches as did Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.).  Lindsey Gustafson (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) also fell twice, but had a close second match against Tanisha Welch of Youngstown State dropping 6-2, 6-3.

Camill Burden (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) and Jackie O’Reilly (De Pere, Wis./De Pere H.S.) both each fell in the Rocket Singles draw.

Valpo went winless during doubles action.  Keifer and Schwartz teamed for an 8-5 defeat in their first match against Akron before also falling to Eastern Illinois.  O’Reilly and Lauren Kloostra (Wymoing, Mich./Calvin Christian H.S.) dropped a pair of matches as well while Wingstrom teamed with Gustafson in one of her matches and Laura Lawson (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) in the other.

“We have a young team and a lot of players have to get experience playing higher in the lineup than they have been used to,” head coach Jay Adams said.  “I thought we worked hard today and showed good effort.”

The Crusaders will return to the courts again on Sunday morning for day two of the event beginning at 7:30 a.m. CDT.
