Czerwonka Sisters Sweep First MVC Weekly Awards of Season

The first set of Missouri Valley Conference weekly awards for the spring season is a sweep for the Valparaiso University women’s tennis team.

Olivia and Claire Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) were named the MVC Doubles Team of the Week on Tuesday, while Olivia also garnered MVC Singles Player of the Week recognition.

Olivia earned the singles award after starting her spring slate with a 2-0 record at No. 1 singles over Valpo’s first two matches of the spring. She has prevailed in all four sets this spring, including a 6-2, 6-2 sweep of IUPUI’s Gabrielle Ochalik to lift the Beacons to a 5-2 victory over the Jaguars on Jan. 15. She continued her success on Jan. 22 vs. SIUE, downing Jordan Schifano 6-1, 7-5 at the top spot. That came over a player who was a member of the All-Ohio Valley Conference second team last season. With her two wins this spring, Olivia has climbed into the top 10 in program history in career singles wins as she is currently tied for 10th with 38.

The Czerwonka sisters are off to a 2-0 start to the season at No. 1 doubles. They earned a 6-4 victory over IUPUI’s Ochalik-Grubb on Jan. 15 to help the Beacons take the doubles point in an eventual 5-2 victory. That doubles win helped Claire avenge a prior defeat as she had lost to Ochalik-Grubb in 2020. The sisters did not drop a game in their 6-0 win over SIUE’s Lambrechts-Thibault on Jan. 22. Claire now owns a program-record 61 career doubles wins, while Olivia has 34 and is two away from cracking the program’s all-time top 10.

With the two awards this week, Olivia possesses seven career MVC weekly accolades. Claire has garnered 10 MVC weekly honors in her accomplished career, seven of which have come as part of the Doubles Team of the Week.

The Beacons will round out a three-match homestand against Saint Louis on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m. at The Courts of Northwest Indiana.
