After picking up a key win in Saturday’s 4-3 triumph over Northern Illinois, the Valparaiso University tennis No. 1 doubles team of Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) and Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Houston Tennis Academy) have been named the Missouri Valley Conference Doubles Team of the Week.
Silva and Czerwonka helped Valpo secure a double point that proved crucial in a 4-3 road win at Northern Illinois on Saturday. With the doubles point hinging on the match at No. 1, Silva and Czerwonka defeated Erika Dimitriev and Anastasia Rakita on a tiebreak, 7-6(1). The dominating tiebreak performance proved to be the difference in the team match, as Valpo secured its third straight triumph and improved to 6-1 on the season.
Czerwonka garnered her 55th career doubles win, surpassing Whitney Chada (2003-2007) for a spot in the top three and moving into a tie with Mara Sonkin (2000-2004) for second in program history.
Silva, a freshman, picked up her first career MVC weekly award. Meanwhile, Czerwonka earned her 11th career MVC weekly honor and her second this season.
The Beacons will play a pair of home matches this weekend, hosting Western Michigan on Saturday at 2 p.m. at The Courts of Northwest Indiana before welcoming in Saint Louis on Sunday at 11 a.m.
