Valpo Tennis Sustains Academic Success as ITA Announces Awards

The Valparaiso University tennis team sustained its tradition of excellence in the classroom as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its Scholar-Athletes and All-Academic Teams this week.

Valpo was recognized as an All-Academic Team again this season by virtue of finishing with a team grade point average of 3.2 or above. In addition, the entire roster earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status for the third consecutive season as all eight student-athletes were recognized.

The following individuals earned ITA Scholar-Athlete Awards by posting GPAs of 3.5 or above during the 2022-23 academic year – Mia Bertino (Lockport, Ill. / Joliet Catholic), Eleanor Chapman (East Sussex, England / Eastbourne College [UT Martin / Lipscomb]), Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy), Allison McConnell (Westland, Mich. / Churchill), Demi Jhaveri (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake), Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Houston Tennis Academy), Elizabeth Sobieski (Muskego, Wis. / Muskego) and Amanda Tabanera (Valencia, Calif. / Valencia).

The tennis team enjoyed another commendable year in the classroom, earning the Valparaiso University Team Academic Award at the Presidential Academic Honors Banquet by posting the department’s highest team grade point average for the second straight year. Czerwonka was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team, while four others received honorable mention. Head coach Bob Modesto’s team compiled a 3.86 team GPA this year.
