2018: Played in 10 games and totaled 63 tackles, ranking fourth on the team… Had 3.0 TFL for eight yards, an interception and a blocked kick… His 6.2 tackles per game ranked 16th in the PFL… Had a key interception in the fourth quarter in a 35-17 win over rival Butler on Oct. 13, making the pick at the Butler 28 and returning it 26 yards all the way to the 2, setting up for Valpo’s final touchdown in a 35-17 win. That was his first career interception… Had the second-highest single-game tackle output in the PFL all season behind only his teammate Jamari Booker when he accumulated 18 tackles on Nov. 10 vs. Jacksonville, helping Valpo to a 48-30 win. That showing included 1.5 TFL… Led the team in tackles for the second straight week by making 12 in the season finale on Nov. 17 vs. Stetson… Also in the Nov. 17 game against the Hatters, blocked a punt that was picked up by freshman teammate Kellan McKeag, who returned it for touchdown to give Valpo the lead midway through the second quarter… Member of PFL Academic Honor Roll.

2017: Played in all 11 games for the Crusaders… Had 14 tackles, seven of which were unassisted while also recording 0.5 TFL…Made his first career tackle on Sept. 9 vs. Duquesne… Had a career-high five tackles on Oct. 7 at Campbell.

2016: Played in two games as a redshirt freshman... Made his collegiate debut on Sept. 3 at Illinois State and his home debut on Sept. 17 vs. Trinity International. 

2015: Did not see action for the Crusaders ... maintained four seasons of eligibility.

Prep: A three-year letter winner for the Knights...earned All-Conference accolades his senior year...also lettered in baseball twice.

Personal: Matthew is the son of Lee and Donna Messler ... majoring in business management.
