Valpo Places 11 on Summit League Honor Roll
Athletes from the Valparaiso University men’s tennis and men’s swimming programs were recognized for their excellence in the classroom on Tuesday as the Summit League announced its 2017-2018 academic honor roll.
Bretl Earns Academic All-League Honor
Junior Robbie Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./Marquette University H.S.) was selected to The Summit League Swimming and Diving Academic All-League Team, released by the league office on Thursday.
Swimmers Conclude Conference Championships Saturday
The Valparaiso University swimming teams wrapped up their season Saturday at their respective conference championships. The men put three athletes in A-finals of the Summit League Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D., while the women had two swimmers in C-finals of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Iowa City, Iowa. Junior Dylan Kirar (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) led the way with a fourth-place finish in the grueling mile event for the men. On the women’s side, sophomore Tara Lawson (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) secured the second-best time in Valpo history in the 200-back.
Multiple Valpo Swimmers Climb Program All-Time Charts Friday
The Valparaiso University swimming teams had several swimmers move up the school’s all-time top-10 lists Friday at their respective conference championships. Junior Dylan Kirar (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) and sophomore Brendon Johnson (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) led the way for the men by placing in the A-finals of the 400-individual medley at the Summit League Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D. For the women, sophomore Paige Wright (Surprise, Ariz./Paradise Honors) made the C-finals in two events at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Iowa City, Iowa.
Kirar Breaks Record to Highlight Second Day of Swimming Conference Finals
The Valparaiso University swimming teams completed the second day of their respective conference championships, with junior Dylan Kirar (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) taking down a nine-year-old school record in the 500-free. Junior classmate Mac Sogandares (Reston, Va./South Lakes) also recorded a top-10 swim at the Summit League Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D. For the women, sophomore Tara Lawson (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) climbed the all-time top-10 list, while the 200-free relay ranked among the program’s all-time best as well at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Iowa City, Iowa.
Swimming Teams Open Conference Championships Wednesday
The Valparaiso University swimming teams began their respective conference championships Wednesday evening with both meets completing two relay events. The women are at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, while the men are participating in the Summit League Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D. After the completion of the 200-medley relay and 800-free relay, the women sit in eighth, just four points behind seventh. The men are in sixth, trailing fifth by only six points. Both teams moved relays into the top-10 of the school record books.
Swimming Concludes Regular Season at Butler Invite
The Valparaiso University swimming teams finished their regular season slate Sunday against a competitive lineup of teams at the Butler Invite hosted by Butler University in Fishers, Ind. The women went up against the Bulldogs, along with Saint Louis, Southern Illinois, Xavier and Youngstown State, while the men battled Ball State, Saint Louis, Southern Illinois and Xavier.
Swimming Battles on the Road Against Eastern Illinois
The Valparaiso University swimming teams collected eight total event wins on Saturday evening at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill. However, the Panthers held on as the women fell by a score of 119-84, and the men were outscored 121-84.

Valpo Swimming Concludes Competition at Carthage Classic
The Valparaiso University swimming teams completed the three-day event in Kenosha, Wis. on Saturday. The Crusaders wound up third overall in the team standings for both men and women, while host Carthage College finished on top of both out of the 10-team fields. The third day of action saw Valpo swimmers move into the school’s all-time Top Ten list in as many days. Sophomore Tara Lawson (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) slid into ninth in the record books for the 400-IM, while freshman teammate Megan Lugar (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) climbed up to seventh all-time in the 100-back. The men’s 200-medley relay recorded the tenth-best time in Crusader history.

The Valparaiso University swimming team started off the Carthage Classic in Kenosha, Wis. with a big splash as junior Dylan Kirar (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) took down an eight-year-old school record on day one. Multiple swimmers and relays moved into the all-time Top Ten list for Valpo. Kirar posted another victory on day two, while teammates senior Max Penn (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep.) and junior Bob Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./Marquette University H.S.) added second and third-place finishes, respectively. McGeath Selected to Lead Valpo Swim Programs
Valparaiso University Director of Athletics Mark LaBarbera has announced the hiring of Miriam McGeath as the head coach of the Crusader men’s and women’s swim programs, effective Dec. 4.
Valpo Swimming Competes Against Saginaw Valley State Saturday
The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s swimming teams fell to the visiting Cardinals Saturday afternoon at the ARC after competing in a dual meet on the road less than 24 hours prior. Sophomore Harrison Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) highlighted the competition for the Crusaders with a win in the 100-freestyle.
Valpo Swimming Splits Dual Meet at Rose-Hulman
The Valparaiso University women’s swimming team took down Rose-Hulman Saturday evening by a score of 160-122, while the men fell to the Fightin’ Engineers 201-93 in Terre Haute, Ind. The women were victorious in 11 different events, and the men won four.
Valpo Swimming Falls in Double Dual Action
The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s swimming teams fought hard on the road Saturday afternoon at Western Illinois, but succumbed to the Leathernecks and Olivet Nazarene on both the men’s and women’s sides in Macomb, Ill. Junior Dylan Kirar (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) and sophomore Dylan Ogle (Simpsonville, S.C./Mauldin) highlighted the day by each capturing a second-place finish for Valpo.

Competing in the squads’ second home meet of the season, the men and women both fell to the Panthers. Sophomore Paige Wright swam her way to a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.

The Valparaiso University swimming teams took to the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center on Saturday to compete against several schools around the state at the Indiana Intercollegiates meet on the campus of Purdue University. Sophomore Paige Wright (Surprise, Ariz./Paradise Honors) led Valpo with a team-best sixth-place finish in the 100-free for the women. Junior Dylan Kirar (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) came in seventh place in the 200-IM, the best finish for the Crusader men.

There were plenty of bright spots for the Crusaders as the men won six events and the women won three. Senior Amanda Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) and junior Dylan Kirar (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) led the way with two individual wins each. Kirar and junior classmate Bob Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./Marquette University H.S.) both moved up the Valpo all-time top-ten list in the 1000-free.
