Valparaiso’s women’s tennis team opened the 2012 spring season on Friday splitting a pair of matches at the Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Club in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Crusaders bounced back from a 7-0 loss during the afternoon against IPFW to defeat Wittenberg 6-1 in the evening contest.

Valparaiso battled back from a 10-point second half deficit to tie the game in the final two minutes, but could never take the lead as Youngstown State defeated the Crusaders 64-58 on Thursday evening at the Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio.

The Valparaiso volleyball team tied for league-high honors, placing four players on the Academic All-Horizon League team for 2011. Sophomore Sarah Dooms (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove), redshirt freshman Lindsey Hauch (Coloma, Mich./Coloma), senior Jenny Pokorny (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and junior Taylor Root (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) all earned the accolade for the combination of their performance on the court and in the classroom.

One of the top outfielders ever to play baseball at Valparaiso University, Russ Steinbeck helped to lead the Crusaders to a pair of Indiana Collegiate Conference championships as well as two NCAA Tournament berths during his career with the Brown and Gold, and on Saturday, February 4, he will be inducted into the Valparaiso University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Valparaiso starts a stretch in which it will play five of its final seven Horizon League contests in the friendly confines of the ARC on Thursday evening, as the Crusaders host Detroit for a special 6:30 p.m. start time.
