Next Up in Valpo Baseball: The Valparaiso University baseball team will return to the road after back-to-back home weekends with the short journey to UIC for a three-game weekend series that is scheduled to begin under the lights on Friday night in Chicago. Every game is big for the Beacons as they need to make up ground in the race to qualify for the conference tournament, but there is still plenty of baseball to be played with four regular-season series remaining.   

Last Time Out: Valpo rallied for a dramatic 7-6, 12-inning victory over Missouri State on Friday thanks to a two-run, walk-off home run by Brady Renfro that came with two outs in the bottom of the 12^th. Missouri State rebounded to win 8-6 on Saturday and 14-3 on Sunday to take the weekend series at Emory G. Bauer Field. Valpo was on the wrong end of a walk-off homer on Tuesday at Northern Illinois, as the host Huskies took advantage of last hacks in a back-and-forth affair to win 10-9 in the nonconference midweek matchup.

Head Coach Brian Schmack: Brian Schmack (200-320) is in his 11th season in charge of the program. He ranks third in program history in seasons coached and games coached as he coached his 500^th game on March 17, 2024 at Campbell. On April 19 vs. Missouri State, he became the third head coach in program history to secure his 200^th win. Schmack, a member of the 2003 Detroit Tigers, served as pitching coach/associate head coach at Valpo for seven seasons prior to his promotion.

Series Notes: Valpo is 65-77 all-time against UIC, the most common opponent in program history, as the two teams have faced off 142 times on the baseball diamond. Valpo took two of three last season at Emory G. Bauer Field in the first Missouri Valley Conference series between the two longtime foes. Last year, UIC surpassed Butler (140) for the program’s most frequent all-time opponent. The Beacons went to UIC for a nonconference series in 2022 and won two of three, but this will mark the first visit to UIC as a Valley member. After this weekend, the team’s last three trips to UIC will have been once for a Missouri Valley Conference series (2024), once for a nonconference series (2022) and once for a Horizon League series (2017).

In The Other Dugout: UIC

• Both teams are coming off midweek games against Northern Illinois, as Valpo visited NIU on Tuesday and UIC hosted the Huskies on Wednesday.
• UIC dropped the opener but battled back to take two of three from Murray State last weekend at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
• The Flames are led by Zane Zielinski, who is hitting .396 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs. Kendal Ewell holds a .375 batting average with 12 dingers and 44 runs driven in. From a pitching perspective, Brandon Bak is 3-2 with a 4.75 ERA in 10 starts.
• Currently in third place in the MVC standings behind only Indiana State and Evansville after being picked eighth in the MVC preseason poll.

Beacon Bombs

• Last season, Valpo drilled 50 home runs, the program’s most since 2001 and the fourth most in program history.
• With 14 regular-season games left on the docket, Valpo is well positioned to once again climb into the all-time top five for single-season home runs.
• The Beacons have launched 44 home runs this year, five away from writing an entry in the program record book.

Notes Wrapping Up April 23 – Northern Illinois 10, Valpo 9

• The lead changed hands time and time again in the late innings after the game was scoreless until the fourth and 4-1 NIU through six.
• The teams combined for 13 runs in the seventh and eighth innings alone in a game where the squads combined for 19 runs on 28 hits in total.
• To illustrate the back-and-forth nature of the contest, seven different pitchers (four Northern Illinois, three Valpo) were at one point in line for either a win or a loss and all ended up with no decisions.
• Valpo played its ninth one-run game of the year and fell to 3-6 in such contests. Four of Valpo’s last seven games have been one-run affairs.
• Kevin Denty and Connor Giusti both made the most of their opportunities in the lineup as each had three hits. Denty was a home run shy of the cycle and had his first collegiate triple, the team’s fourth of the season.
• Although NIU did get two late walks, the first four Valpo pitchers did not issue any free passes and control was a bright spot for most of the day.
• Valpo head coach Brian Schmack pitched collegiately at Northern Illinois from 1992-1995 before going on to a professional career that included time in the big leagues with the Detroit Tigers in 2003.
• Valpo played a three-game set with NIU that was held at Chicago State in 2019, but this marked the team’s first visit to DeKalb since 2018.

Schmack Reaches 200-Win Milestone

• Head coach Brian Schmack reached the 200-career win milestone with a 7-6, 12-inning victory over Missouri State on April 12.
• Schmack ranks third in program history in career victories, trailing only Paul Twenge (1988-2006, 378) and the legendary Emory G. Bauer (1954-1981, 359).
• Schmack reached a milestone on March 17 at No. 21 Campbell, his 500^th game at the helm of the program. He became the third skipper in program history to reach that number, joining the aforementioned Twenge (1,011; 1988-2006) and Bauer (1954-1981; 606).

Notes Wrapping Up Missouri State (April 19-21)

• The 7-6, 12-inning victory in Friday’s series opener helped Valpo snap a six-game skid in head-to-head matchups with Missouri State and improve to 2-19 all-time against the Bears. Both of Valpo’s wins over Missouri State have come in extra innings as the previous one was May 25, 2021 in an MVC Tournament elimination game. That marked Valpo’s first-ever regular season victory over Missouri State.
• Brady Renfro (third of the season, 18^th career), Alex Ryan (fifth of the season, eighth career), Ryan Maka (second season, 14^th career) and Liam Patton (first at Valpo) all homered.
• Half of Valpo’s hits were home runs as the team hit four home runs in a game for the first time since Feb. 26, 2023 at UT Martin.
• The series opener was Valpo’s longest game in terms of innings played since May 10, 2019, a 5-4, 14-inning win over Southern Illinois.
• Carson Husmann drilled his sixth home run of the season and the 29^th of his collegiate career in Saturday’s 8-6 loss. That marked his fourth home run in a six-game span.
• Missouri State took Sunday’s series finale 14-3 despite Kyle Schmack’s 30^th career home run and a big day at the dish from Alex Ryan, who racked up three of the team’s eight hits including a homer and double.

• Kyle Schmack has hit 31 career home runs, the third most in program history and the most by any Valpo player since 2002.
• Schmack has entered the program’s single-season top 5 in home runs as well. His 13 long balls in 2024 rank tied for fourth in single-season program history.
• Schmack has increased his career double total to 43, a number that ranks seventh in program history.
• The Valpo slugger moved into the program’s all-time top 10 in RBIs during the Easter weekend series vs. Bradley. His total of 121 is tied for eighth in program history.
• Schmack also ranks among the program’s all-time leaders in career walks with 97. He ranks sixth in that category.
• Enter this weekend’s series at UIC, Schmack has 208 career hits. He recently moved into 10^th in program history.
• Schmack also ranks ninth in program history in runs scored with 136.

Inside the Schedule

• Valpo started the season with a four-game series against an Alabama State team that won 41 games and went 26-4 in the Southwest Athletic Conference last season.
• The Beacons played three more in the Heart of Dixie from Feb. 23-25 at Alabama. The Crimson Tide of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) also won over 40 games in 2023, posting a 43-21 mark en route to an NCAA Regional crown and Super Regional appearance.
• A challenging early-season docket continued on March 1, when Valpo played at Elon, a team that went 33-22 last season including a 19-9 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
• After a neutral site game on March 3 vs. Binghamton of the American East Conference – another team that finished with a winning record last year – Valpo visited Jacksonville, a 34-win team last year and a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
• Valpo had a three-game series at No. 21 Campbell (March 15-17) against a team that went 46-15 and 22-5 in the Big South in 2023. The conference champion Fighting Camels reached NCAA Regionals.
• The Beacons made their way to Nashville, Tenn. for a game against preseason No. 6 Vanderbilt on March 26. The Commodores went 42-20 last season, were the runners-up of the College World Series in 2021 and won the national title as recently as 2019.

Inside the Assistants: Top assistant Kory Winter returns to head coach Brian Schmack’s staff this season, while assistant coach Jeff Mayes is back for Year 2 and assistant coach Adam Brian has joined the fold.

• After spending three seasons as a volunteer assistant, Kory Winter was hired as Schmack’s top assistant and hitting coach beginning with the 2019 campaign. Winter played collegiately at Wittenberg and has completed coaching stints at Muskingum University and Shippensburg University. He is also Valpo’s outfield instructor.
• Jeff Mayes is in his second season on the Valpo coaching staff, serving as the team’s infield coach while also assisting with the team’s hitters and manning the third base coaching box. He spent the previous three seasons on staff at his alma mater Aurora University, a Division-III institution in Illinois, where the program amassed an 83-21 record during his tenure. Prior to that, he enjoyed a standout playing career for the Spartans.
• Adam Brian is in his first season on Valpo’s staff after graduating from Bradley. He works with the team’s catchers and holds down the first-base coaching box. Brian’s father Braden Brian played college baseball at Eastern Kentucky and was selected in the 30^th round of the 1986 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Montreal Expos.
