Cara Morowski scored the lone goal of the match with 13:17 remaining in regulation on Friday afternoon as Loyola (Chicago) upended Valparaiso 1-0 at Eastgate Field in Horizon League action.
Morowski took a feed from Cynthia Morote-Ariza in the box and scored from five yards out for the goal that proved to be the difference in the match.
“This was two quality soccer teams competing today,” head coach John Marovich said.
The two teams were scoreless in the first 45 minutes, with the Ramblers holding a slim 4-3 advantage in shots. Mele Cabral (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) made two big saves in the first stanza to keep the match deadlocked at the break.
Loyola (10-8, 5-1 Horizon) finished the match with a 12-9 edge in shots, but Cabral made five saves to keep the Crusaders close. Katie Groesch made two stops for the Ramblers to earn the shutout.
“It’s a difficult result for us but I’m not disappointed with the players’ effort,” added Marovich. “It is unfortunate because we played well tactically.”
