Valparaiso University’s women’s basketball program has announced its two annual award winners from the 2011-2012 season, with Laura Richards (Connersville, Ind./Connersville H.S.) and Ashley Varner (South Bend, Ind./Washington H.S.) picking up the honors.

Playing for the fourth time in seven days, Valparaiso hung with 10th-ranked Green Bay for 27 minutes on Wednesday evening before the Phoenix went on a 15-0 run and eventually downed the Crusaders 77-53 at the Kress Events Center in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championship held in Green Bay, Wis.

Valparaiso seniors Ashley Timmerman (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac H.S.) and Ashley Varner (South Bend, Ind./Washington H.S.) made sure their careers in a Valparaiso University uniform did not come to an end on Monday evening, leading the Crusaders to a 47-39 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the first round of the Horizon League Championship held at the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee, Wis.

Postseason basketball begins for Valparaiso on Monday evening as the Crusaders open play in the 2012 Horizon League Championship. The ninth-seeded Crusaders head to Wisconsin to take on eighth-seeded Milwaukee in a first round contest.
