The 2011 Horizon League Championships begin on Tuesday afternoon at Eastgate Field. The third-seeded Valparaiso Crusaders host the sixth-seeded Butler Bulldogs, the Brown and Gold’s longtime instate rival, in the quarterfinals. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Valparaiso’s women’s soccer team was represented by four players when the Horizon League’s First and Second Teams as well as All-Newcomer Teams were released by the conference office on Monday afternoon (Oct. 31).

Valparaiso wrapped up the regular season on Friday afternoon battling Youngstown State for 110 minutes, but neither team could find the back of the net and the two sides settled for a 0-0 double-overtime draw at Stambaugh Stadium in Youngstown, Ohio.

The 2011 regular season wraps up in women’s soccer this Friday afternoon as Valparaiso travels east to Youngstown, Ohio to battle the Penguins of Youngstown State. With a victory the Crusaders will finish in a tie for second place during the regular season. Valpo will wrap up the third seed for next week’s Horizon League Soccer Championship with a win or a Wright State loss or tie against Cleveland State on Friday.

Valparaiso University midfielder Casey Pedersen (Northville, Mich./Mercy H.S.) has been named the Horizon League Women’s Soccer Player of the Week after leading the Crusaders to a 1-0-1 record this past week and helping the Brown and Gold secure a home tournament match in next week’s Horizon League Championships.

A goal with just 2:35 remaining in regulation allowed Wright State to tie the match on Sunday afternoon as Valparaiso and the Raiders battled to a 2-2 double-overtime draw on Senior Day for the Crusaders at Eastgate Field.

Mikki Nuccio’s (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon H.S.) goal with just five seconds remaining before halftime proved to be the difference in the match as Valparaiso defeated Butler 1-0 on a rainy and windy Wednesday afternoon at Eastgate Field.

Valparaiso will close out the home portion of the 2011 regular season with a pair of key Horizon League matches this week. On Wednesday the Crusaders will entertain Butler at Eastgate Field before the Brown and Gold hosts Wright State on Sunday in a Senior Day matinee.
