Valparaiso remains in seventh place through 36 holes of play at the Horizon League Golf Championships after shooting 357 on Saturday at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
The Crusaders have a two round total of 708, trailing sixth place Green Bay by 11 strokes. UIC is 13 shots behind Valpo entering Sunday’s final round. Butler leads the way at 654 after shooting a second round 323. The Bulldogs lead Detroit by 18 shots through 36 holes. Loyola (Chicago) is third at 679, one stroke ahead of Cleveland State. Youngstown State is fifth at 697.
“We didn’t play as well as we would have liked to today,” head coach Mat Blair said afterwards. “We had a rough day and we don’t have much room for error.”
Kelly Voigt (Palatine, Ill./Fremd H.S.) led the way for the Brown and Gold on day two shooting an 84, eight shots better than her opening round. She opened the second round with a birdie, one of two she had on the day, and is at 176 heading into the final 18 holes.
“Kelly played much better today,” Blair added. “She struck the ball much better than she did yesterday.”
Brianna Davy (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) continues to lead the way overall for Valpo at 168 after shooting 86 on Saturday. She is tied for 11th in the individual standings.
Michelle Kleckner (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale H.S.) added an 89 and is 173 overall heading into the final round while Jessica O’Brien (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) posted a 98 and sits at 191 heading into the opening round.
“Our girls are really trying out there,” Blair concluded. “We’ll go back out there tomorrow and do our best once more.”
Valparaiso will return to action on Sunday morning for the final 18 holes. Play begins at 6:30 a.m. CDT.
