Balanced Effort Leads Beacons to Improvement on Final Day in Lone Star State
Katie Schreiner posted the team's second-best score on Tuesday.

The Valparaiso University women’s golf team had its best 18 holes of the week on Tuesday in the third and final round of the Islander Classic, which was hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the par-72, 6112-yard Corpus Christi Country Club in Corpus Christi, Texas. Sophomore Taylor Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind. / Michigan City) turned in a sub-80 round on a day where all five Beacons carded 83 or better.

How It Happened

  • Skibinski’s 79 led the way, the first sub-80 round by a Valpo golfer this spring. She finished at t-30 in a 63-player field with a 54-hole score of 246.
  • The team’s second-best Round-3 score came courtesy of Katie Schreiner (Fenton, Mo. / Summit), who posted an 80 to finish the week at 248. She tied for 36th on the player leaderboard.
  • The remaining players in the Valpo lineup all stroked 83s as part of a balanced effort – Anna Fay (Ada, Mich. / Forest Hills), Madison Keil (LaGrange, Ind. / Lakeland) and Roslyn Leitner (Dundee, Ill. / Harry Jacobs). Fay had the best 54-hole score of that trio at 250 (t-40).
  • As a team, Valpo climbed to ninth on the leaderboard at 994, outdoing McLennan CC (996) and Prairie View A&M (1007). Valpo finished with a 325 in Round 3, the team’s top score of the tournament.

Thoughts from Head Coach Jill McCoy

“Today was definitely an improvement. It was nice to see everyone work toward more consistency and continue to manage expectations. Getting back outside has definitely created some excitement for the golf season to get going again. We are already looking forward to the Benbow Invite in Tampa.”
