Crusaders Earn Regional Ranking; Schorsch, Emhardt Crowned Sectional Champs


The Valpo men's tennis team cracked the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)'s Midwest Regional Top 10 for the first time in program history. On an individual level, junior Jeffrey Schorsch earned a #18 ranking amongst singles players in the Midwest, also a program first. Schorsch and Emhardt continue play in the US Open qualifier as part of a busy summer.


15 Crusaders Earn Spring Academic All-League Honors


15 Valparaiso student-athletes earned spots on the Horizon League Spring Academic All-League teams, as announced by the league office this morning. Men’s outdoor track and field had five athletes honored, while baseball, men’s golf and women’s outdoor track and field each had three selections to go with one from men’s tennis.


Woodson Promoted to Associate Head Coach


Valpo men's tennis head coach Jim Daugherty announced today that Michael Woodson has been promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach. Since Woodson joined the coaching staff prior to the 2012-13 season, the Crusaders have gone 51-28.


Men's Tennis Commit Nets State Title in Pennsylvania


Chad Kissell took home the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) Class AAA Singles Championship this past weekend. TennisRecruiting.net currently ranks Kissell 63rd nationally following a 25-0 season at Latrobe High School. Kissell and Brian Pecyna will begin their collegiate careers with the Brown and Gold this fall.

Schorsch Named HL Player of the Year; Bacalla First Team All-League


Sophomore Jeffrey Schorsch was named Horizon League Player of the Year; classmate Dave Bacalla was also named First Team All-League as announced by the league office Thursday evening. Schorsch is the first Crusader to earn the distinction since Valparaiso joined the Horizon League, and just the fourth ever to be named a Conference Player of the Year.

Crusaders Split Doubleheader with Miami, Wheaton


The Valparaiso men's tennis team earned a split in its doubleheader Tuesday, defeating Wheaton College 6-1, but falling 6-1 to the University of Miami. Jeffrey Schorsch recorded wins in both his singles and doubles matches. With the victories, the sophomore is now 19-6 in singles play and 21-4 in doubles action.

The Horizon League released its men's and women's tennis preseason tennis polls Thursday. The men were selected third, while the women were slotted to finish eighth.


Men's Tennis Receives Two NLIs


Brian Pecyna and Chad Kissell have signed National Letters of Intent (NLI) to join the Crusader program as freshmen for the 2015-16 season. Pecyna, a Glen Ellyn, Illnois native, is ranked 218th in the nation. Kissell, an exceptional all-around athlete from Pennyslvania, is ranked second in the Middle States and 65th in the country.


Spring Tennis Schedules Released


The Valparaiso men's and women's tennis teams released its respective schedules Tuesday. The men host IPFW on Friday, January 30th at the Courts of NWI in their first home match of the spring while the women's home opener is slated for Friday, February 13th versus Nebraska-Omaha.


Honert, Gardner Bestowed Awards


Eric Honert, Valparaiso men's tennis all-time leader in singles victories, earned the 2014 Vernon John Award last week. The award recognizes the year's outstanding Colorado collegiate male player. Meanwhile, freshman Garrett Gardner was elected as the boy’s recipient of the Diane McNeal Jr. Sportsmanship Award per the Northeastern Ohio Tennis Association.


Schorsch/Emhardt Advance to Semifinals, Drop Tight Contest to #16 Team in Nation


It took the 16th-ranked doubles team in the country to finally slow down the sophomore duo of Jeffrey Schorsch and Charlie Emhardt. Ohio State's Ralf Steinbach and Kevin Metka scored a narrow 6-4, 6-4 win over the Crusader tandem in the semifinals of the ITA Regionals in Ann Arbor, Mich. Schorsch/Emhardt advanced to the semis after they blew past Notre Dame's Drew Dawson/Eric Schnurrenberger, 8-1, in the quarterfinals.

Down in Tulsa, Charlie Emhardt won his consolation match over Austin Peay's Iago Seffrin 6-2, 7-6 (5) at the ITA All-American Championships. Up in Kalamazoo, Garrett Gardner took the Flight F championship with a straight set victory over Green Bay's Michael Tebon, while Michael Savaglio and Chase Hamilton captured 3rd place finishes in Flights C and G, respectively. Daniel Oakes also won the Flight G consolation title.

Sophomore defeated Oral Roberts' Michael Sosnowski in straight sets before falling 6-3, 6-2 to Troy's Daniel Bustamante in the first day of the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Jeffrey Schorsch got past Wichita State's Jocelyn Devilliers in three sets before losing to Rishab Agarwal of Mississippi State in the second round.

Freshman Garrett Gardner advanced to the championship match of Flight F singles after a 2-0 day at the Vredevelt Invitational in Kalamazoo, Michigan Saturday. Fellow newcomer Chase Hamilton will compete in Sunday's third place tilt following a win over Michigan State's Paul Heeder.

Emhardt & Co. Cap Off Banner Weekend at Purdue Fall Invitational

Sophomore Charlie Emhardt captured the Flight C Singles championshp Sunday morning with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over DePaul's Kyle Johnson. Just a couple hours later, Emhardt teamed up with fellow sophomore Jeffrey Schorsch to take the Flight A Doubles title with a decisive 8-3 win over Cleveland State's Colton Buffington and Alil Shabib. Dave Bacalla and Daniel Oakes were also victorious in the consolation bracket of Flight B Doubles.


Four Crusaders to Compete for Championships at Purdue Fall Invitational Sunday


Sophomore Charlie Emhardt will have a chance to win a singles and doubles title tomorrow at the Purdue Fall Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. He'll face DePaul's Kyle Johnson in the finals of the Flight C singles bracket before joining Jeffrey Schorsch in the championship match of the Flight A doubles immediately following. The doubles team of Lucas Waak and Michael Savaglio will compete in the finals of the Flight C doubles opposite Western Michigan's Jimmy Beckwith and Maik Steiner at 11:15 am ET.


Crusaders Collect Eight Wins in Opening Day of Purdue Fall Invitational


The Valparaiso men's tennis team racked up eight wins in the opening day of the Purdue Fall Invitational Friday. Second round play continues tomorrow along with the opening of doubles action.


Schorsch, Emhardt Crack ITA Preseason Doubles Top 60


Sophomore doubles tandem received 53rd national ranking in Preseason Men's Doubles Rankings as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Monday. Both were also named to prequalifying singles bracket at the All-American Championships along with fellow sophomore Dave Bacalla.


Fall Tennis Schedules Released


The men's and women's tennis teams released their fall schedules Wednesday. The men's team opens its fall slate at the Purdue Fall Invitational Sept. 19-21 while the women's team begin their fall schedule with a doubleheader versus Aquinas College and Davenport.


Schorsch, Emhardt Earn Runner-Up at ITA National Summer Championships

Sophomore doubles tandem won four straight matches to advance to finals before falling 8-6 to Notre Dame's Alex Lawson and Billy Pecor. The pair scored victories over duos from Indiana, Wofford, and a mixed team of Western Michigan's Cahn and Michigan State's Forman in the process.


Schorsch to Compete at National Summer Circuit Championships

Valparaiso sophomore Jeffrey Schorsch will square up against some of the top singles talent in the nation August 9th-12th at the 2014 ITA/USTA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Indiana. Schorsch will also join teammates Charlie Emhardt and Brian Hickey in doubles action.


Schorsch Continues to Scorch Competition

Sophomore singles player downed Michigan State's Brett Forman 6-4, 6-4 in the finals of Monday's ITA Summer Circuit Event hosted by Western Michigan University to claim first summer singles title since Eric Honert in 2012. Schorsch later teamed up with fellow sophomore Charlie Emhardt to advance to the semifinals of the doubles tourney. Junior Lucas Waak also scored a doubles championship at the Bill Van Lieshout Tournament over the weekend.


Men's Tennis Earns ITA All-Academic Accolades

Crusaders were one of just 80 squads named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team; Honert, Savaglio, Schorsch dubbed All-Academic Scholar Athletes for maintaining a grade point average of at least 3.5 or higher


Crusader Duo Enjoying Summer Success

Jeffrey Schorsch and Charlie Emhardt claimed doubles victory Tuesday at ITA Summer Circuit event held at Purdue University. The sophomore tandem downed Indiana University's Stefan Lugonjic and Jacob Rother 8-2 to cap a perfect 5-0 run.


Men's Tennis to Hold Free Clinics on July 9th

All ages and skill levels are invited to join the Crusader men's tennis coaching staff for a pair of free clinics on July 9th at the Valpo Tennis Complex. The kid's camp (7-17 years old) runs from 4:00 pm-5:30 pm while the adult camp (18+) will be held from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm. No sign up is necessary!
