Fields Named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, MVC Pitcher of the Week

Valparaiso University baseball junior Colin Fields (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) received high recognition on Monday as he was named a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. In addition, Fields was named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday. The honors came after Fields tossed the eighth no-hitter in program history and the first since 1992 on Saturday at Middle Tennessee State.

Fields carved out a slice of Valpo baseball history in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The junior right-handed pitcher threw the program’s eighth no-hitter and first since 1992 to lift Valpo to a 5-0, seven-inning win over Middle Tennessee State in Game 1 of a doubleheader, an eventual sweep for the Brown & Gold.

After walking the leadoff batter in the bottom of the first, Fields sent down 19 straight until the seventh inning, when he worked out of a bases-loaded jam to close out the victory and the no-no. Fields’ effort marked just the third no-hitter in the Division-I nation this season as he became the second individual player to toss a no-no in 2021, joining Ohio’s Joe Rock. Fields racked up 10 strikeouts along the way, his highest single-game strikeout total since his career high of 11 on March 23, 2019 vs. Butler. Fields’ effort marked the first shutout by a Valpo pitcher since April 2017.

Fields became Valpo’s first National Player of the Week since teammate Easton Rhodehouse received the same honor from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in May 2019. He also became Valpo’s first MVC Pitcher of the Week since the aforementioned Rhodehouse performance in 2019.
