"Walt Reiner helped Valpo's football program progress, serving as co-head coach with Emory Bauer from 1957-1964.

The Crusaders enjoyed many successes during this era, compiling a 40-29-2 record. Reiner was instrumental in guiding Valpo to the Indiana Collegiate Conference Championship in 1964 when the Crusaders finished with a 6-3 mark. Walt and Bauer were selected as ICC Coaches of the Year in 1961 after Valpo finished with a 7-2 record, including a 5-1 mark in conference play.

During Reiner's era, the Crusaders produced winning records six times, posting 6-3 marks in 1958, 1962 and 1964. He also served the athletic department as an assistant football coach from 1949-52, track coach in 1950 and 1952-56, as well as a wrestling coach during this era. The 1955 track team finished 6-2, including 4-1 in the ICC.

Reiner was also an associate professor in physical education from 1952-56 and was an instructor in the department from 1949-52. An active member of the community, he was the Founder and Director of TheYouth Leadership Training Program (1956-62), a member of the Lutheran Inner City Peace Corps (1963-65), Founder and Director of Prince of Peace Volunteers (1964-68), and Founder and Director of Project Neighbors (1984-01), creating family networks between different classes and ethnic groups. Walt is an Associate Professor Emeritus, Christ College.
