Year Inducted 2002

"Majorie Albohm, one of the pioneers for women in athletic training, first became interested in the field as a student at VU.

While playing field hockey and basketball at VU from 1969-72, Albohm sprained an ankle. At that time, athletic trainers were not assigned to women's sports. While being treated by a men's athletic trainer, Albohm considered filling the need for athletic trainers in women's athletics.

Following graduation, she earned a master's degree in athletic training at Indiana State in 1973. Upon learning that there were no full-time positions for women athletic trainers, she joined Concordia University in River Forest, Ill. as a physical education teacher, while working some in athletic training.

In 1974, Albohm became the first full-time athletic trainer in women's athletics when she was hired by Indiana University. After working at Indiana until 1982, Albohm joined the Center for Hip and Knee Surgery in Mooresville, Ind., where she has remained. She is the director of the Orthopedic Research Foundation and has served as an officer of District 4 in the National Athletic Trainers Association. Albohm was the first woman appointed to the NATA Board of Certification and she was one of the first women to be selected as Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer.

She has also played an integral role in the NATA Research and Education Foundation and served as chair of the NATA Reimbursement Advisory Group. Albohm is already a member of two halls of fame - the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association. She also was honored with the Valparaiso University Alumni Achievement Award in 1986.
