The Valparaiso University volleyball team battled gamely against MVC regular season champion and 25th-ranked Missouri State Friday night at the ARC, but the Bears claimed a tight first two sets on their way to a 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-20) victory over the Crusaders. Despite the loss, the Crusaders secured a berth in next week’s MVC Tournament with SIU’s loss at Loyola.

Led by one household name and one standout newcomer, the Valparaiso University women’s basketball team cruised to a season-opening 81-47 win over IU Kokomo at the Athletics-Recreation Center on Thursday night. Senior Dani Franklin did her thing – pouring in 26 points to lead all scorers – while freshman Bryce Blood provided the game’s most significant storyline, registering a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds in her collegiate debut.

The list of milestones the Valparaiso University football team reached with Saturday’s victory is a lengthy one, but the day can easily be summarized in one sentence that has a nice ring to it: The Hoosier Helmet is coming back to Valparaiso. The Crusaders knocked off rival Butler 36-28 at the Sellick Bowl, in the process reaching five wins for the first time since 2007, notching their fourth league win in a single year for the first time since 1968 and moving within one victory of their first winning season since 2003.

Tied at one set apiece entering the third set Friday at Evansville, the Valparaiso University volleyball team rolled to a win in the third set and then won the key points late in the fourth set in a 3-1 (25-12, 18-25, 25-15, 25-22) victory over the Purple Aces. Freshman libero Rylee Cookerly (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) broke Valpo’s record for digs in a season by a freshman in the victory.

Valpo Cross Country Ends Season at NCAA Regionals


The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s cross country teams finished their 2017 seasons on Friday afternoon at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The men finished 24th and the women came in 30th. Both squads defeated Missouri Valley Conference foe Evansville and the men also bested Green Bay. Seniors Sidney Noble and Kim Heiny led the charge for the Crusaders.

Highest Scoring Output Since 1996 Helps Valpo Cruise to Second Straight Lopsided PFL Victory


The 2017 Valparaiso University team continued to establish new precedents on a chilly Saturday at Brown Field. The Crusaders once again did something no Valpo team had done before – this time scoring over 60 points in a Pioneer Football League game. Valpo dominated visiting Morehead State 63-32, turning in the fifth-highest scoring output in program history and the highest since 1996. The Crusaders forced six turnovers and racked up 597 yards of offense in the win.

Valparaiso University women’s soccer senior Grace Rogers (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) set a new program record for career assists and matched the single-season assists record as the Crusaders leveled their regular season finale Thursday with Evansville in the 23rd minute, but the Purple Aces struck less than 90 seconds later for the decisive goal as Valpo fell 2-1. The Crusaders will be the sixth seed for the upcoming MVC Tournament and will travel to third-seeded Loyola to open tournament action on Sunday afternoon.

Before Saturday’s Homecoming game against Stetson, Valparaiso University football head coach Dave Cecchini identified three keys to success – turnovers, penalties and special teams. The goals of winning those areas were seemingly prophetic as they propelled the Crusaders to a dramatic 27-24 victory over the Hatters at Brown Field. The list of key plays for the Crusaders over the course of the afternoon is lengthy, but no play was larger than an interception by redshirt senior J.J. Nunes with 1:50 left, squashing a Stetson drive that had reached the Valpo 12 yard-line.

After amassing 237 first-half yards and trailing just 17-13 at the break, the Valpo offense was stymied in the second half.

Balanced Attack on Display as Crusaders Rout Trojans


The Valparaiso University football team entered the win column in resounding fashion on Saturday afternoon, pulling away for a 44-10 victory over Trinity International at Leslie Frazier Field in Deerfield, Ill. Sophomore Cody Boxrucker had three touchdown runs, senior Frank Catrine scored twice and senior Jarrett Morgan shattered a career high with 127 rushing yards. The Crusaders utilized a balanced attack, rushing for 266 yards and passing for 252 to total 511 yards of offense.

The Valparaiso University volleyball team dug deep to secure the Buffalo Wild Wings Invitational championship Friday in Macomb, Ill., posting one of the top dig totals in a four-set match in program history in a 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-19) victory over McNeese Friday evening. Earlier in the day, Valpo took care of business against host Western Illinois, sweeping the Leathernecks in straight sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-19). The Valparaiso University women’s golf team teed off the 2017-2018 season on Sunday, participating in the Redbird Invitational hosted by Illinois State University in Normal, Ill. The Redbirds welcomed the Crusaders as a late addition to the field after Valpo’s initial plans of partaking in the Golfweek Program Challenge in Pawleys Island, S.C. were scrapped when the event was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma. Valpo Softball Holding Walk-On Tryouts, Seeking Team Managers


The Valparaiso softball program will be holding walk-on tryouts for the 2018 season on Thursday, Aug. 24, starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Valpo Softball Complex. In addition, the Crusaders are seeking student managers to assist the program during the fall and spring seasons.

Entering its 25th year of intercollegiate competition, the Valparaiso University women’s soccer program has a long history of success. The Crusaders earned Mid-Continent Conference and Horizon League championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament out of both conferences. Now, Valpo faces a new challenge this year, as it joins the Missouri Valley Conference.

Crusaders Tabbed Fifth in MVC Preseason Poll; Griffith All-Conference


Entering its first season of Missouri Valley Conference play in 19 years, the Valparaiso University women’s soccer team has been picked to finish in fifth place in 2017 according to preseason polling of the conference’s head coaches. In addition, junior forward Cory Griffith (Lemont, Ill./Providence Catholic) has been selected to the 11-player preseason All-Conference squad.

Crusaders Claim Win in Exhibition Play


Taking to the pitch for the first time in competitive action on Sunday afternoon in Morehead, Ky., the Valparaiso University women’s soccer team put together a strong showing, taking down Morehead State by a 4-1 final in the Crusaders’ lone exhibition match. Valpo opens the regular season Friday night at Brown Field.

Crusaders Claim AVCA Team Academic Award


The Valparaiso University volleyball program received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 academic year, as announced by the AVCA today. It marks the 12th time in the last 14 seasons that the Crusaders have earned the award. In addition, Valpo was named to the AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative team GPA which ranks among the top-25 in Division I volleyball.

Pioneer Football League Releases Preseason Poll


The Valparaiso University football team has been picked to finish 10th in the 11-team Pioneer Football League, according to a preseason polling of the league’s head coaches. The league released the poll on Monday and will announce its preseason All-PFL team on Tuesday.

Head coach Kate Stake and the Valparaiso University softball program will host a Fall Experience Camp on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Valpo Softball Complex. The camp is open to players who will graduate from high school from 2018 through 2023.

The Valparaiso University men’s golf team was recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) on Wednesday for its continued excellence in the classroom. The Crusaders received President’s Special Recognition, an honor given to teams who achieve a team grade point average of 3.5 or better.

Valpo Bowling Recognized For Academic Excellence


Five members of the Valparaiso University bowling team earned All-Academic recognition from the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) for the 2016-17 campaign, while the Crusaders also earned academic honors as a team from the NTCA. The Crusaders have had at least three bowlers honored each year of the program’s existence.
