Crusaders End Season as Nation's Best Stealing Bases

The Valparaiso University softball team closed out the 2008 season as the nation’s most prolific team on the basepaths, leading all Division I softball squads with 2.57 stolen bases/game as the NCAA released its final official statistics update Tuesday.  The Crusaders outpaced Women’s College World Series participant Alabama, which closed the year with 2.47 steals/game, for the top spot in the rankings.

Valparaiso men’s basketball head coach Homer Drew announced today that Cory Johnson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) will join the Crusader program after spending his first two seasons at Iowa State. Johnson, a 6’7”, 230 lb. forward, must sit out the 2008-09 season under NCAA transfer guidelines, and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2009-10 campaign.

The Valparaiso softball team’s scheduled doubleheader at Cleveland State on Saturday has been postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions.  The two teams, who were scheduled to play a three-game series, will now just play one doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. CDT.  Valpo can win the Horizon League regular season championship if it sweeps the twinbill.

Senior Courtney LaFerle (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) knocked a two-run single up the middle in the fifth inning on Senior Day to give Valparaiso the lead for good as the Crusaders beat Youngstown State in the opener, 4-1, to set a new program record for wins in a single season with 28.  The Penguins bounced back to defeat Valpo in the nightcap, 7-2.

Notre Dame Game Date Changed

The Valparaiso softball team’s home game against Notre Dame, originally scheduled for next Thursday, May 1, will now be held on Tuesday, April 29 at the Valparaiso University Softball Field.  First pitch will remain at 5 p.m. CDT.

2007-2008 Valpo Women's Hoops Year in Review

Valparaiso men’s soccer head coach Mike Avery announced today the addition of two recruits that will join the Crusaders for the 2008 soccer season.  Israel Bisoni (Senador Amaral, Brazil) and Rodolfo Lucas (Mogi Mirim, Brazil) each spent the last two seasons as teammates at Coffeyville Community College in Coffeyville, Kansas, and will transfer to the Crusaders as juniors with two years of eligibility remaining.  The duo joins the seven previously announced newcomers to the 2008 Crusader squad.

Valparaiso wraps up the 2007-2008 regular season on Saturday with a key Horizon League tilt in Indianapolis, Ind. against instate rival Butler.  The Crusaders and Bulldogs are tied for fifth place in the league standings.  A Valpo victory along with a little help in other league action could enable the Crusaders to steal the final home game of the Horizon League Tournament quarterfinals to begin next week.

Crusaders Use Late Runs to Defeat Evansville; Improve to 9-1

After having a 13-point halftime lead cut to as few as four points, Valparaiso erupted with four 3-pointers in a five-possession span in the second half to put the game away, eventually defeating Ball State Saturday night at the Athletics-Recreation Center, 71-58.  The victory was the tenth straight win by the Crusaders at the ARC.

12 Valparaiso softball players have been named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar-Athletes for their performance in the classroom last season.  The 12 honorees helped the Crusaders to the sixth-best cumulative team GPA in Division I softball.

Steve Ogden (Wauwatosa, Wis./West H.S.) had two touchdown receptions and more than 200 yards worth of catches for Valparaiso on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough as Mason Webb kicked a 24-yard field goal with 1:40 left to lift Morehead State to a 16-14 victory over the Crusaders at Brown Field.

Cawiezell Signs With Cleveland Indians

Valparaiso pitcher Dallas Cawiezell (Long Grove, Iowa/North Scott) has opted to forgo his final year of eligibility and has signed with the Cleveland Indians organization, which drafted him in the 40th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball amateur draft.  The Indians have assigned Cawiezell to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the New York-Penn League, their short-season Class A affiliate.

King Named Crusader Assistant Coach

Valparaiso men’s soccer coach Mike Avery announced today that Rick King has been hired as an assistant coach for the Crusader program.  King comes to Valpo after spending the 2006 season as a volunteer assistant at Notre Dame, where he helped guide the Fighting Irish to the Elite 8 of the NCAA College Cup.
