Haskins to Join Crusader Program

Valparaiso University men’s basketball head coach Homer Drew announced today that De’Andre Haskins, a 6’4”, 190 lb. guard out of La Lumiere School in LaPorte, Ind., has agreed to join the Crusader program as a freshman for the 2008-09 season.


Diebler, Haanpää Named to NABC Honors Court

Valparaiso’s Jake Diebler (Upper Sandusky, Ohio) and Samuel Haanpää (Kerava, Finland/Cornerstone [Texas] Christian) have both been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court.


Cameron Witt to Join Valpo Program This Fall

Crusaders Bring In Iowa State Transfer

Valparaiso men’s basketball head coach Homer Drew announced today that Cory Johnson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) will join the Crusader program after spending his first two seasons at Iowa State. Johnson, a 6’7”, 230 lb. forward, must sit out the 2008-09 season under NCAA transfer guidelines, and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2009-10 campaign.

Crusaders Fall to Houston in CBI Quarterfinal

Valparaiso held a 20-19 lead over Houston halfway through the first half of the two squads’ College Basketball Invitational quarterfinal matchup Monday evening in Houston, Texas, but the Cougars took the lead shortly thereafter and led the rest of the way, eventually earning a 91-67 victory.

Crusaders Win Postseason Thriller Over Washington

Shawn Huff (Helsinki, Finland/Makelanrinne) scored the eventual game-winning basket with 2:45 to play and Valparaiso held Washington scoreless the rest of the way as the Crusaders earned a thrilling 72-71 victory over the Huskies in opening round action of the College Basketball Invitational Wednesday evening in Seattle, Wash.  Valpo advances to the quarterfinals of the inaugural CBI and will face Houston on Monday.

Crusaders Win Overtime Thriller; Clinch First-Round Home Game; Huff Scores Game-Winner With 1.6 Seconds Remaining

Jarryd Loyd (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) found Shawn Huff (Helsinki, Finland/Makelanrinne) cutting to the basket with 1.6 seconds left in overtime Saturday afternoon at the Athletics-Recreation Center, and Huff converted the game-winning three-point play to give Valparaiso a 75-73 overtime victory over Wright State.  The win, broadcast nationwide on ESPN2, means that Valpo will host a first-round Horizon League Championship game Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the ARC.


Crusaders Close Out Regular Season With ESPN2 Game Against Wright State

Cleveland State composed a 15-3 run late in the second half Thursday night at the Athletics-Recreation Center to pull away from Valparaiso, as the Vikings defeated the Crusaders by a 71-58 score.

Crusader Men Face Nation's Best for Fourth Consecutive Year

Valparaiso will stand toe-to-toe with the nation's best team for a fourth consecutive season Sunday evening, as the Crusaders travel to North Carolina to take on the top-ranked Tar Heels.  Valpo enters the game coming off of a 68-58 loss at Wisconsin, a game in which the Crusaders were within three points with under a minute to play, while North Carolina owns a 12-0 record and most recently downed Nevada by a 106-70 score.

Crusaders Look For 10-1 Saturday Against Chicago State

Crusaders Use Late Runs to Defeat Evansville; Improve to 9-1

Valparaiso closed the first half on a 9-0 run to tie its game with Evansville Tuesday evening at the Athletics-Recreation Center, and followed with an 8-0 run late in the second half to break open a close game, going on to win by a final tally of 75-67.  The win extends the Crusader winning streak to seven games, the longest since the 2002-2003 season, and moves Valpo’s overall record to 9-1, the best ten-game start in the 19-year tenure of head coach Homer Drew.


Crusaders Return Home to Defend Winning Streak against Evansville

Coming off of two wins on the road in its first weekend of Horizon League play, the Valparaiso Crusader men's basketball team returns to the ARC to take on Evansville at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night.  The Crusaders are defending a six-game overall winning streak, as well as a ten-game winning streak at the ARC dating back to last season.  A win Tuesday would put Valpo at 9-1 for the first time in the 19-year tenure of head coach Homer Drew.


Crusaders Use Hot Shooting to Win at Detroit

Valparaiso placed four players in double figures and shot at a 66.7% clip from the field to win at Detroit on Saturday afternoon, 81-68.  The win gives the Crusaders a sweep of two road games in their first weekend of Horizon League action and moves the team to 8-1 for just the second time in the 19-year career of head coach Homer Drew.

Crusaders Win at Wright State in Horizon League Debut

Trailing by three points with under two minutes to play, Valparaiso’s defense forced three consecutive Wright State turnovers and the offense took advantage, as Shawn Huff (Helsinki, Finland/Makelanrinne) hit a 3-pointer to tie the game and Jarryd Loyd (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) converted a fast-break layup off a steal to give Valpo the lead for good on the way to a 71-66 victory Thursday evening in Dayton, Ohio.  The win, which marked the first Horizon League contest for the Crusader men, snapped Wright State’s 14-game home winning streak.


Crusader Men Kick Off Inaugural Horizon League Slate

Off to one of the best starts in team history, the 6-1 Crusaders begin their first season of Horizon League competition on Thursday with a game at 2007 regular season co-champion and tournament champion Wright State.


Crusaders Hold Off Ball State; Improve to 6-1

After having a 13-point halftime lead cut to as few as four points, Valparaiso erupted with four 3-pointers in a five-possession span in the second half to put the game away, eventually defeating Ball State Saturday night at the Athletics-Recreation Center, 71-58.  The victory was the tenth straight win by the Crusaders at the ARC.

Late First-Half Run Fuels Crusader Victory

Valparaiso held Mid-American Conference preseason favorite Western Michigan without a field goal for nearly 11 minutes spanning the two halves Wednesday night at the Athletics-Recreation Center, taking a one-point deficit and turning it into a 14-point lead as the Crusaders downed the Broncos, 77-65.  It marked the second straight game that Valpo has defeated a conference favorite.


Crusaders Return Home to Face Western Michigan on Hawaiian Night

Valparaiso returns home to the Athletics-Recreation Center on Wednesday to host Western Michigan at 7:05 p.m.  It will be Hawaiian Night at the ARC, as the first 500 fans through the doors will receive free leis.  Numerous Hawaiian-themed activities will take place throughout the night, and both coaching staffs will be sporting special Hawaiian attire.  WVUR will be broadcasting an extended hour-long pregame show prior to the game, featuring the Crusader Coach's Corner.


WWLO Joins Valpo Sports Radio Network

Valparaiso Athletics Director Mark LaBarbera announced today that WWLO, 89.1 FM, located in Lowell, Ind., has joined the Valpo Sports Radio Network.  WWLO will broadcast 20 of Valpo’s remaining 25 men’s basketball games live over its airwaves.


Valpo Downs Maryland Eastern Shore on South Padre Island

Led by 23 points and nine rebounds from freshman forward Bryan Bouchie (Washington, Ind./Washington), Valparaiso held off Maryland Eastern Shore Friday afternoon in South Padre Island, Texas, defeating the Hawks, 66-55.


Valpo Closes Out South Padre Island Invite with Win

Crusader Men Begin Play at South Padre Island against UMES

Valparaiso opens play at South Padre Island Friday afternoon with a game against Maryland Eastern Shore at 3:30 p.m.  The Invitational will conclude on Saturday afternoon with the winner facing the winner of the Austin Peay/Florida Gulf Coast game, while the two losers will also meet in a consolation game.


Crusaders Rally, But Eventually Fall at Vanderbilt

Valparaiso came back from a 44-31 halftime deficit to take a 53-50 lead with 12:30 to play, but Vanderbilt regained the lead with under ten minutes to go and never gave it up, downing the Crusaders 87-78 Tuesday night in Nashville, Tenn.


Valpo Basketball Receives Two National Letters of Intent

Valparaiso men’s basketball head coach Homer Drew announced today that Erik Buggs and Logan Jones have signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period and will join the Crusader squad as freshmen for the 2008-2009 campaign.

Crusaders Take Down Mastodons

Valparaiso never trailed Thursday night at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind., taking a nine-point halftime lead over IPFW and going on to defeat the Mastodons, 74-64.


Valpo Hits Road to Take On IPFW

Sparks Named New Crusader Assistant Coach

Valparaiso men’s basketball coach Homer Drew announced today that former Crusader player Chris Sparks has been brought in as an assistant coach.  Sparks will fill the coaching vacancy left by Jason Hawkins, who has stepped away from coaching in order to focus full-time on gaining his master’s degree from Valparaiso.

Valpo's McPherson, Hawkins to Tour Germany with Athletes in Action

Junior Brandon McPherson (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) will be one of 10 current and former college basketball players participating in a six-game competitive tour against professional teams in Germany, while Jason Hawkins will be serving as an assistant coach for the squad.  The AIA team is one of 11 Athletes in Action international-touring men’s and women’s basketball teams this summer.
