Eric Brauer tossed a complete-game, three-hit victory in the second game and Tom Starck and Adam Knobel combined for a victory in the first game as Valpo swept a doubleheader from Chicago State by scores of 5-2 and 8-3.
Keith Keslinke had two hits and two RBIs, and Kevin Kutansky added three hits and an RBI as Valpo defeated Western Illinois 5-4 in the second game of a doubleheader. The Leathernecks won the first game 3-2.
The Valparaiso University baseball team will play Northern Illinois on Tuesday night at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary. Eric Brauer limited Southern Utah to one run over 5 1/3 innings as Valpo defeated the Thunderbirds 5-2 in the second game of a Mid-Continent Conference doubleheader. Southern Utah won the first game 9-8 in 11 innings.
After Valpo took a one-run lead in the top of the eighth inning, Southern Utah scored four in the bottom of the frame and held on to defeat Valpo 8-5 in the opener of a four-game Mid-Continent Conference series.
Valpo scored nine runs in the sixth inning and went on to defeat Western Michigan 11-6. Matt Augustine belted his first career homer - a two-run shot - and Kevin Kutansky and Troy Garrett had two RBIs each.
In a game featuring two of the best pitchers in the Mid-Continent Conference, 19th-ranked Oral Roberts used a three-run sixth inning to defeat Valpo 4-1. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was suspended due to darkness after two scoreless innings and will be continued Sunday at 11 a.m. followed by another twinbill.
Tom Starck tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout and Kyle Obenauf turned in a five-hit complete-game victory as Valpo swept a Mid-Continent Conference doubleheader from Oakland by scores of 1-0 and 3-1.
Valparaiso University will play two baseball games on back-to-back nights in May at RailCat Stadium-U.S. Steel Yard in Gary. The Crusaders host Northern Illinois on Tues., May 11 at 7 p.m. and then entertain Indiana on Wed., May 12 at 7 p.m.
Ball State scored eight times in the first four innings and went on to defeat Valpo 15-3. Valpo's Brian Rzepka went two-for two at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Mike Arensdorff belted his third homer of the season.
The Valparaiso University Baseball Team will open its season on Friday at 2 p.m. against Ball State at the Governor's Cup Tournament hosted by the University of Evansville. The Crusaders will also play on Saturday and Sunday. Indiana State, IPFW and Butler join Ball State, Evansville and Valpo at the event.
