Valpo Falls to DBU to Open Double-Elimination Portion of MVC Tournament
The Valparaiso University baseball team faced a quick turnaround with the first game of the day on Wednesday following a resilient, extra-inning win over Missouri State that wrapped up late Tuesday evening. Top-seeded DBU defeated Valpo 12-2 in seven innings to begin the double-elimination portion of the MVC Tournament at Itchy Jones Stadium in Carbondale. Valpo will be back in action in an elimination game that begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Valpo to Open MVC Tournament on Tuesday
For the second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, Valpo will match up with Missouri State in the opening round after the two teams completed the regular season against one another. Much like 2019, Valpo finished the regular year by incurring a road sweep at the paws of the Bears. Eighth-seeded Valpo will face off with fifth-seeded Missouri State for the fifth consecutive game on Tuesday, this time with the season on the line in a win-or-go-home round to begin the MVC Tournament. If Valpo prevails on Tuesday, it will advance to the double-elimination portion of the event and take on top-seeded DBU on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Baseball Closes Out Regular Season
The Valparaiso University baseball team battled to another one-run game against Missouri State on Saturday at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo., but for the third time in the series the Bears prevailed in a game dictated by a single tally, this time 2-1. Valpo starter Trent Turzenski (Burlington, Wis. / Burlington) twirled a gem, but was the tough-luck losing pitcher. The Brown & Gold will get another crack at the Bears as the two teams will face off in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Carbondale.

The Valparaiso University baseball team continued to play close contests in Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader at Missouri State, as the Bears prevailed 7-6 in extra innings for their second straight one-run win to start the series. Valpo had the lead as late as the seventh in the nightcap, but eventually fell 9-4 to wrap up a long day at US Baseball Park in Ozark, Mo.

Three pitchers combined to limit Missouri State to two runs, but the host Bears edged the Valparaiso University baseball team 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo. Baseball to Close Regular Season in Springfield
The Valparaiso University baseball team will close out the 2021 regular season this weekend with a four-game series against Missouri State at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo. This is the second straight Missouri Valley Conference slate that reaches its conclusion with Valpo visiting Missouri State, as the team also wrapped up the 2019 campaign by facing off in Springfield. All eight teams will qualify for the upcoming MVC Tournament in Carbondale, Ill., but Valpo could be seeded anywhere from third to eighth based on the results of this weekend’s games across the league. Note that suspended games (resumed the following day) are a possibility this weekend as play must be finished by 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and by 2:30 p.m. on Saturday due to Missouri State sharing a field with the Springfield Cardinals.

Valpo Rallies Late to Force Extras, Evansville Prevails in Additional Frame
The Valparaiso University baseball team surged from behind for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to create a seven-all deadlock in Sunday’s home finale at Emory G. Bauer Field, but visiting Evansville scored four in the top of the 10th and held on for an 11-9 victory in a game that featured a frenetic finish. Matt Olive (Minneapolis, Minn. / Blake School) delivered a game-tying pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth, but Valpo stranded the bases full.

Seniors Easton Rhodehouse (Gilbert, Ariz. / Highland) and Jon Tieman (Crystal Lake, Ill. / Prairie Ridge) were a winning combination on the hill for the second straight weekend, pitching the Valparaiso University baseball team to a 5-1 Senior Day victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Saturday at Emory G. Bauer Field. Visiting Evansville bounced back to earn the split with a 12-9 triumph in Game 2.

Early Offense Not Enough in Series Opener vs. Evansville
A strong outing from starting pitcher Ryan Mintz (Lombard, Ill. / Willowbrook) and an early burst of offense put the Valparaiso University baseball team in good position in Friday’s series opener, but visiting Evansville stormed from behind for a 13-6 victory at Emory G. Bauer Field. Valpo posted crooked numbers in each of the first two innings and held a 5-0 lead in the early going, but the Purple Aces rallied late.

Baseball to Celebrate Seniors During Final Home Weekend
The Valparaiso University baseball team will look to capture its third straight home series win this weekend as Evansville comes to town for a four-game set. This will mark the final home series of the season as Valpo plans to celebrate its seven-player senior class between games of Saturday’s doubleheader with an on-field ceremony. A series win this weekend would allow Valpo to win every home series this season. However, every weekend presents a challenge in The Valley, one of four conferences in the nation with all of its teams in the Top 175 of the RPI, joining the ACC, Big 12 and SEC.

For the third time this season, the Valparaiso University baseball team held the lead against nationally-ranked Notre Dame as late as the sixth inning. On Tuesday, Valpo had the No. 8 Fighting Irish on the ropes by taking a 3-0 edge into the eighth, but Notre Dame rallied for a seven-run eighth inning and garnered a 7-4 victory.

The Valparaiso University baseball team will look to continue its recent hot streak as it vies for a third consecutive series win this weekend against Bradley. However, this time the team will have to do it on the road, where Valpo is seeking its first conference win of the season. The Brown & Gold have collected home series victories in Missouri Valley Conference play each of the last two weekends, taking three of four from both Southern Illinois and Illinois State. The Valparaiso University baseball team enjoyed a successful Saturday for the second consecutive week, this time edging Western Kentucky 8-6 in 11 innings thanks in part to a go-ahead single by Steven Fitzsimmons (Golden Valley, Minn. / Robbinsdale Cooper) in the top of the 11th to snap a six-all tie. Quality relief work from Jon Tieman (Crystal Lake, Ill. / Prairie Ridge) played a key role as the veteran right-hander stymied Western Kentucky to the tune of no runs on two hits and no walks over the game’s final 3 2/3 innings.

Fields’ magic on the mound helped Valpo blank the Blue Raiders 5-0 in a seven-inning contest in Game 1, before the Brown & Gold prevailed 3-2 in eight innings in Game 2.

The Valparaiso University baseball team rallied to tie the game in the top of the ninth on Friday at Jim Case Stadium in Jacksonville, Ala., but host Jacksonville State responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to walk off with a 5-4 victory. A clutch, two-out hit by Parker Johnson (Golden Valley, Minn. / Hopkins) tied the game in the top of the ninth, but the Gamecocks (2-3) used their own piece of two-out hitting to win the game on a Jay Williams single.

After an opening weekend that featured strong pitching from head coach Brian Schmack’s staff and a season-opening victory for the first time in seven years, the Valparaiso University baseball team will play three more in the state of Alabama this weekend in series at Jacksonville State. Valpo and the Gamecocks begin the set with a single game on Friday before playing a doubleheader to round out the set on Saturday.

Strong Pitching Not Enough as Valpo Falls in Series Finale
Colin Fields (Libertyville, Ill. / Libertyville) put together a solid showing in his first start of the season, striking out eight over 4 1/3 innings and yielding just one hit, but he was charged with an unearned run that crossed the dish following his departure and took a tough-luck defeat in the Valparaiso University baseball team’s 4-1 setback at UAB. Head coach Brian Schmack’s pitching staff put together an encouraging opening weekend that saw Valpo take the opener before the host Blazers won the remaining two games in Birmingham, Ala.

Baseball Falls at UAB on Saturday
The Valparaiso University baseball team will play a rubber match on Sunday in Birmingham after host UAB evened the three-game series with an 8-2 triumph on Saturday afternoon. The left side of the Valpo infield paced the offense, as freshman Kaleb Hannahs (West Terre Haute, Ind. / Terre Haute) and senior Damon Jorgensen (Blair, Neb. / Blair) notched two hits apiece.

Drudge’s Blast, Mintz’s Arm Lift Baseball to Season-Opening Victory
The Valparaiso University baseball team grabbed the lead thanks to a second-inning home run by Jeremy Drudge (Plymouth, Ind. / Plymouth), and never looked back courtesy of a quality pitching performance by Ryan Mintz (Lombard, Ill. / Willowbrook) on its way to a season-opening 6-2 victory over UAB in Birmingham, Ala. In the process, the 2021 team became the first Valpo squad to win a season opener in seven years.

Baseball Season Begins Friday in Birmingham
The Valparaiso University baseball team will return to the diamond in a game situation for the first time in over 11 months this weekend as the club makes the trip to Birmingham, Ala. to match up with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Valpo will begin a 54-game slate that leads into the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament with this weekend’s set at UAB. The Brown & Gold are slated to play 17 nonconference games prior to the April 1 Missouri Valley Conference opener at Dallas Baptist (DBU).

Valpo Baseball Unveils 2021 Schedule
The Valparaiso University baseball program has announced its schedule for the 2021 season, a slate that begins on Friday, Feb. 19 with the opener of a three-game series at UAB in Birmingham, Ala. That starts a 52-game regular season slate leading into the 2021 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament hosted by Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill. starting on May 25.
