Valpo to Open MVC Tournament on Tuesday

For the second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, Valpo will match up with Missouri State in the opening round after the two teams completed the regular season against one another. Much like 2019, Valpo finished the regular year by incurring a road sweep at the paws of the Bears. Eighth-seeded Valpo will face off with fifth-seeded Missouri State for the fifth consecutive game on Tuesday, this time with the season on the line in a win-or-go-home round to begin the MVC Tournament. If Valpo prevails on Tuesday, it will advance to the double-elimination portion of the event and take on top-seeded DBU on Wednesday at 10 a.m.


Baseball Closes Out Regular Season

The Valparaiso University baseball team battled to another one-run game against Missouri State on Saturday at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo., but for the third time in the series the Bears prevailed in a game dictated by a single tally, this time 2-1. Valpo starter Trent Turzenski (Burlington, Wis. / Burlington) twirled a gem, but was the tough-luck losing pitcher. The Brown & Gold will get another crack at the Bears as the two teams will face off in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Carbondale.

The Valparaiso University baseball team will close out the 2021 regular season this weekend with a four-game series against Missouri State at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo. This is the second straight Missouri Valley Conference slate that reaches its conclusion with Valpo visiting Missouri State, as the team also wrapped up the 2019 campaign by facing off in Springfield. All eight teams will qualify for the upcoming MVC Tournament in Carbondale, Ill., but Valpo could be seeded anywhere from third to eighth based on the results of this weekend’s games across the league. Note that suspended games (resumed the following day) are a possibility this weekend as play must be finished by 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and by 2:30 p.m. on Saturday due to Missouri State sharing a field with the Springfield Cardinals.


Valpo Rallies Late to Force Extras, Evansville Prevails in Additional Frame

The Valparaiso University baseball team surged from behind for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to create a seven-all deadlock in Sunday’s home finale at Emory G. The Valparaiso University baseball team grabbed the lead thanks to a second-inning home run by Jeremy Drudge (Plymouth, Ind. / Plymouth), and never looked back courtesy of a quality pitching performance by Ryan Mintz (Lombard, Ill. / Willowbrook) on its way to a season-opening 6-2 victory over UAB in Birmingham, Ala. In the process, the 2021 team became the first Valpo squad to win a season opener in seven years.


Baseball Season Begins Friday in Birmingham

The Valparaiso University baseball team will return to the diamond in a game situation for the first time in over 11 months this weekend as the club makes the trip to Birmingham, Ala. to match up with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Valpo will begin a 54-game slate that leads into the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament with this weekend’s set at UAB. The Brown & Gold are slated to play 17 nonconference games prior to the April 1 Missouri Valley Conference opener at Dallas Baptist (DBU).
