“I Need a Hug” Program In Running For Funding Through Pepsi Refresh Project
The “I Need a Hug” program, a partnership between the Valparaiso softball program and the United Way of Porter County, is currently in the running to receive $25,000 of funding through the Pepsi Refresh project. Fans can vote once per day through the end of the month for “I Need a Hug”, and the top ten ideas in the voting at the end of June will receive funding.

Pitching her second game of the day, Valparaiso's Alex Lagesse (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) hooked up with three-time league Pitcher of the Year Amanda Macenko in a pitcher's duel, but in the end, the top-seeded Cleveland State Vikings earned a 1-0 victory in eight innings over the fourth-seeded Crusaders at the Horizon League Championship in Cleveland, Ohio. The loss sends Valpo into the elimination bracket to face UIC Friday morning at 9 a.m. CDT.

A total of five Valparaiso players earned accolades from the Horizon League as the league announced its postseason awards Wednesday. Sadie Conner (Washington, Ill./Washington) and Sara Strickland (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) both were named First Team All-League, while Sam McGee (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and Jordan Rutkowski (Alden, N.Y./Alden) each earned Second Team honors. Crusaders Set New Wins Record in Sweep of Youngstown State
It was a record-setting Senior Day at the Valparaiso University Softball Field Saturday afternoon as the Crusaders swept Youngstown State, 8-0 and 4-1, in Horizon League action. Valpo Takes Both Ends of Doubleheader From Loyola
On an overcast day at the Valparaiso University Softball Field, the Crusader softball team brought some sunshine to the field, dominating in all facets of the game as it swept a key Horizon League doubleheader from Loyola, taking the first game 4-0 before ending the second game by a 9-1 score in five innings. Valpo has now won 29 games this season, just one win shy of matching the school record for victories in a single season.

Crusader Softball Signs Wisniewski to NLI
Valparaiso softball head coach Randy Schneider announced today that Amanda Wisniewski has signed a National Letter of Intent during the current signing period and will join the Crusaders as a freshman for the 2011 season. Wisniewski joins Angie Doerffler and Amanda Korb, who both signed during the early signing period, as incoming freshmen for next year.

Korb Receives Third-Team Academic All-American Honors
Valparaiso senior outfielder Karen Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) earned one last accolade for her stellar career both on the field and in the classroom on Wednesday, as she was selected as an ESPN the Magazine Third Team Academic All-American as voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Crusaders See Season End in Extra-Innings Slugfest With Loyola
Valparaiso and Loyola engaged in a slugfest Friday evening at the Horizon League Championships, with the lead changing hands on multiple occasions, but after tying the game with two outs in the top of the seventh, the Crusaders could not come out on top, as the Ramblers ended up earning a 10-9 win in eight innings. The loss concludes Valpo's record-setting season at 25-24.
