Hecker Homers as Softball Season Comes to End Wednesday
The Valpo softball team refused to go down quietly in its MVC Championship opener Wednesday afternoon in Evansville, Ind., scoring multiple runs in each of the final two innings. It wouldn’t be enough, however, as the Brown and Gold saw their season come to an end at the hands of Indiana State, 9-5.

Softball Heads to MVC Championship
Valpo heads to the 2021 MVC Championship this week in Evansville, Ind. As the tenth seed, Valpo opens tournament play against seventh-seeded Indiana State on Wednesday afternoon. The Brown and Gold will have to win five games in a row in the single-elimination bracket to claim the tournament title.

Softball Holds Senior Day Saturday
The Valpo softball team closed out the regular season on Saturday afternoon at the Valpo Softball Complex, falling to visiting Illinois State, 7-1, as the Redbirds secured the MVC regular season title. Following the game, Valpo honored a pair of seniors in its Senior Day ceremony – second baseman Addi Burke (Mesquite, Texas/John Horn) and manager Alex Dixon (Milan, Ind./Milan).

Softball Twinbill Versus Loyola Rained Out

Seventh-Inning Rally Comes Up Short For Softball Sunday
The Valpo softball team put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap of Sunday’s MVC doubleheader with Drake, getting the potential winning run to the plate with one out, but the rally came up short as the Bulldogs earned the 6-3 win. Drake won the opener as well by a 10-2 final.

Saturday Softball Canceled Due to Rain
Mother Nature was the winner Saturday at the Valpo Softball Complex, as persistent rain throughout the day forced the cancelation of Saturday’s action against Drake. The series will be shortened from three games to two games, with the two teams now set for a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.

Valpo softball junior catcher Taylor Tonoian (Saugus, Calif./Saugus) broke the program’s single-game record for runners caught stealing, throwing four runners out on the basepaths Wednesday as the Brown and Gold fell by a 7-1 final score at Loyola.

It took two totally different paths to get there, but in the end, the result was the same, as the Valpo softball team earned a pair of one-run victories to close the Thundering Herd Round Robin on Sunday. Valpo bested Saint Francis (Pa.) early Sunday morning, 4-3, and then took down a perennially strong Marshall team with a rally in the tournament finale, 5-4.

Softball Offensive Outburst Earns Split Saturday at Belmont
It was a multitudinous line of Valpo runners crossing the plate in its second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Belmont, as the softball team closed out the twinbill with a 9-1 run-rule win over the host Bruins. The day finished with a split, as the opener went the way of Belmont on a walk-off triple in the bottom of the seventh for a 2-1 final.

It was a dream debut for freshman pitcher Caitlyn Kowalski (Temperance, Mich./Notre Dame Academy), as in her first collegiate start, she tossed a one-hitter to lead Valpo to a 3-1 victory over Western Illinois in the first of two games for the Brown and Gold Saturday at the DePaul Dome Tournament in Rosemont, Ill. In its second game, Valpo dropped a 3-2 decision to Kansas City in the international tiebreak.
