The Valparaiso University women’s basketball team saw its season come to an end with an 86-58 defeat to No. 21 Drake on Friday afternoon at the TaxSlayer Center in Moline, Ill. After picking up a Senior Day win over Loyola and a first-round tournament victory over Indiana State, Valpo’s seniors played their final game in a Valpo uniform on Friday. This senior class became the first in program history to win a conference tournament game in all four seasons.

After trailing by as many as 13 points, the Valparaiso University women’s basketball team roared from behind and eventually held on for dear life on Thursday evening at the TaxSlayer Center in Moline, Ill. When the clock hit zero, the Valpo bench erupted with joy, celebrating a 79-77 win over Indiana State in the first round of the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Appropriately enough, it was senior Meredith Hamlet (McBain, Mich. / McBain) who scored a team-high 25 points, helping extend her career beyond Thursday.

From laughter to tears and everything in between, Saturday ran the full gamut of emotions for the Valparaiso University women’s basketball seniors. But when this year’s seniors stepped off the Athletics-Recreation Center floor for the final time, the emotion they felt was one of delight after turning around a 26-point loss in the conference opener on Jan. 6 at Loyola to beat those same Ramblers 81-74. A game that exemplified the program’s progress over the course of the season saw all five starters finish in double figures in a true team effort.

Valpo to Honor Four Seniors on Saturday

One walked on to the team this season after a four-year career as a volleyball standout. One has taken on a larger role as a key contributor in her final year on campus. One has become a familiar and friendly face to everyone around the program and was a starter throughout her career when healthy. One has started nearly every game since the beginning of her freshman campaign and ranks fifth in program history in career scoring. Four different players and four different paths to senior day, but all have represented the Valparaiso University women’s basketball program in a positive manner in their time with the team, and all will be celebrated at the 2019 home finale on Saturday afternoon against Loyola.

The Valparaiso University women’s basketball team has made 3-point shooting a hallmark of the program throughout the season, as evidenced by setting the school record for made 3s in a single season. But Sunday afternoon marked a rare cold shooting showing from beyond the arc, contributing to a 74-53 defeat to Illinois State at Redbird Arena in Normal, Ill.

Ellenson, Hales Hit Five 3-pointers Apiece in Defeat to Drake

Sophomore Ella Ellenson (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake) and junior Grace Hales (Cromwell, Ind. / Westview) splashed in five 3-pointers each, but that wasn’t enough for the Valparaiso University women’s basketball team to knock off defending MVC champion Drake on Friday. The visiting Bulldogs prevailed 88-62 at the Athletics-Recreation Center despite Valpo hitting 15 total shots from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Valparaiso University women’s basketball team will spend its first night in a hotel in over a month on Tuesday before competing in the final road game of the nonconference schedule on Wednesday at Purdue Fort Wayne. The last time Valpo spent a night in a hotel was Friday, Nov. 16 ahead of the Saturday, Nov. 17 game against St. Francis Brooklyn in Morehead, Ky. Valpo has played four of five at home with the lone road game being a one-day trip to Chicago State on Nov. 29.

The Valparaiso University women’s basketball team will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as Miami (Ohio) comes to the Athletics-Recreation Center for a 1 p.m. tip time. Head coach Mary Evans is quite familiar with the RedHawks, as this team beat Ohio three times last year including a two-point game in the MAC Tournament while Evans was an assistant for the Bobcats. Now, Valpo will look to find a way to knock off a quality MAC opponent that is off to a strong start this season. This will be the program’s annual ugly sweater game, so fans are encouraged to sport their ugliest holiday sweater. In addition, the game will be a “study break” – all students will receive free pizza and there will be a contest for the ugliest sweater.
